Man, that's a really good point. Straight ahead rock is really on the decline compared to how it was 10 years ago. In the mid 00's there was a plethora of straight ahead rock bands out there (e.g., the White Stripes, the Strokes, the Hives, the Vines, etc, etc, etc). It seems like a lot of the "rock" bands getting press right now tend to be of the folk, electronic, or psychedelic variety. I'm sure it'll come back, but it's definitely in a lull right now.

Something rock has going for it (that jazz never had) is a more basic accessibility to it. Although it's interesting to wonder if a 100 years from now whether or not straight ahead "rock bands" will exist in the same way we think about them now. Probably not in the stadium filling, rock legends variety, I'm guessing.
