I definitely love some of the songs on my "100 years" playlist more because I discovered them while making the CD for my great-grandma than I would have otherwise.

And this pirate metal stuff even has nostalgia for me because I used to have a friend who loved pirate/shanty music. Yeah, it's fun on its own, but it has that added boost of "Oh man, Anne would love this."

Now that I'm on Spotify, it's interesting listening to my Monday recommendations playlist sometimes, and just feeling nothing for most of the songs. These were supposedly chosen because the algorithm knows they are similar to things I like (Oh Lord, what is next Monday's going to look like after today's piratical discoveries???) but half the time I just "meh" through it. Your post is making me feel like this means I have no musical preferences of my own or something!

Yeah, I think that's pretty normal, especially once you become an adult. It's very hard to really just take music, movies, etc, on face value any more. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. I think it's kind of how we're designed. If you think about it, a lot of things that are considered "sophisticated" require you to take those cultural/social pressures into account to appreciate. For instance, more complex tasting food is not usually appreciated by kids. You have to be something of an adult, who's interested in trying things because others think they are worth enjoying. And some times it takes a number of times before you appreciate them. If you just simply decide on first encounter whether or not you will enjoy it, then you might never appreciate things that you'll later end up loving.

Also, I feel the same about so much music (and other things) today. I think part of it is once you've become an adult, you've kind of already "heard it all before". Where as when you're younger, everything seems so new and exciting. Even when you hear something you haven't heard before, you kind of know that it's not that special for something to be new and different. Kind of like how all of SImon's action cartoons bore me as an adult, because I kind of know how all the plot cliches are going to go before the show is 5 minutes into it. But for Simon, it's exciting and new.
