The Blood of Heroes

9/11 Tribute Page

As the representatives of the people we are here to declare that our resolve has not been weakened by these horrific and cowardly acts. --Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, September 11, 2001

These photographs capture the horror and heroism of September 11 and its aftermath. It was a day that none of us will ever forget - not just because of the losses we endured, but because of the acts of bravery we witnessed. This was an unprovoked act of war that killed thousands of innocent men, women and children. They were individuals of every race, religion and ethnicity. The fact that these people hailed from 83 different nations confirms that this was not just an attack against the City of New York or the United States of America. It was an attack against the very idea of a free, inclusive, and civil society. Freedom’s response to terrorism was, and remains, inspiring. Twenty-five thousand lives were saved that day, in the most successful rescue operation in our history. Our rescuers met the worst of humanity with the best of humanity, and in the process they inspired freedom-loving people everywhere.

These powerful images are enduring reminders of their struggle and sacrifice. They are a reminder of the moral obligation we have to the memory of those brave souls we have lost. They are also a testament to the resilience of free people. The attacks of September 11th were intended to break our spirit. Instead we have emerged stronger. We feel renewed devotion to the principles of political, economic and religious freedom, the rule of law and respect for human life. We are more determined than ever to live our lives in freedom.

Rudolph W. Giuliani
Mayor of the City of New York
