Character Information

General
Canon Source: Metal Gear Solid
Canon Format: Video game
Character's Name: Sunny Gurlukovich-Emmerich
Character's Age: 6
Conditional: If your character is 13 years of age or under, please clarify how they will be played. Sunny is young and has little to no social abilities so she’ll be a shy little girl who spends a lot of time on her computer and working with electronic gadgets to pass her time when she isn’t cooking, usually successfully thanks to Naomi’s help. Much of her attention can usually be found focused on a computer or cooking. She cares about anyone and everyone she makes a close relationship with.

What form will your character's NV take? A petal pink camera phone with Hello Kitty on the back. Looks like this.

Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: None, she is extremely skilled in computer programming and advanced robotics due to her time with the Patriots. If something needs programming, from VCR’s to advanced government websites and computers, or even complicated viruses or ways to be rid of such viruses, Sunny is more than capable of doing so.
Conditional: If your character has no superhuman canon abilities, what dormant ability will you give them? Something like "Electrical transportation/communication" but instead of just being able to just travel through electrical conduits, televisions, computers, etc., she'd be able to use it to manipulate certain devices like her own computer or her Metal Gear Mark 3. With her current skills in hacking, computer programming and mechanics, this would increase efficiency in any work she does and make her able to upgrade something or hack something much faster than she might usually.

She'd also be able to take physical control of her Mark 3 and not have to worry about how far the remote controls range extends, except when she's in the presence of others or enters it into a contest. Her range of control would probably start to slip around seven miles from her current location, ten if she puts all her focus on it.

The range of her powers will be limited by the same Pull that keeps her on the island, so she won't be able to manipulate anything 10 miles off shore, but she'll be able to manipulate any type of device she'd to be able to have personal access to in the city. Firewalls and such, such as some unhackable electronic security measures she probably still won't be able to get around, so there's probably not much chance of her being able to pop out in a high-level SERO computer lab with these powers.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: Sunny was born in 2008 in a Patriot run hospital, where she was taken from her mother’s care shortly after to be held prisoner for Olga’s cooperation. At a young age, she was put to work on computers by the Patriots, making her a prodigy in computer programming, hacking, etc. Her skills with a computer were made, unintentionally, on par with Otacon’s if not better. Little is known about what Sunny did or was made to do while she was under the Patriots care, but when Raiden rescued her, she had no social abilities and stuttered often when she spoke with someone. Sunny was quite aware of what Raiden went through to save her and couldn’t have been more appreciative.

Living aboard the Nomad over the next few, Otacon became something of a father-figure for the orphaned Sunny and she adopted some of Otacon’s behavior. She took to using the computers on board the Nomad in order to learn more about herself, the outside world and who her parents were. Hal at one point remarks that the net is her home and in a sense, he is correct but also, not. Sunny never expresses any desire to leave the Nomad to see anything she learns about on the net. With her uncles help, she eventually discovers a bit about her mother and gets a picture which she keeps in the kitchen to look at while she cooks.

Sunny is, in essence, a member of Philanthropy, helping to build and program the Metal Gear Mk II, a mini Metal Gear that carries a bit of ammo for Snake, has an electrified tentacle for distracting enemies and helps to keep Snake in contact with the Nomad alongside his Codec. She is also responsible for finding the designs for Snake’s OctoCamo, having hacked the system from DARPA and downloading the specs and designs to the Nomad’s large system of computers.

With a love for cooking, Otacon keeps three chickens on board the Nomad so Sunny has enough eggs to satisfy her love for cooking. She visibly always cooks sunny side-up eggs and calls it her “Sunny Side-up Fortune telling”. If the eggs come out good the mission will be a success, if not then the mission will fail.

When Campbell finally comes to Snake to ask him to stop Liquid Ocelot’s insurrection, they didn’t prevent Sunny from hearing their whole mission briefing, though Otacon did keep her out of the room. But, there’s no door to Sunny’s room, so she could hear without difficulty.

When Snake left on the mission, and Sunny made sure to provide backup by researching some of the people that Snake met, especially Drebin. When he finally found him, Liquid Ocelot messed with the SOP system, which caused the nanomachines in Snake’s body, as well as all of the other soldiers in the facility’s nanomachines, to suddenly go haywire. However, thanks to Rat Patrol Team 01, Snake was returned to the Nomad where it was discovered that he had be given an injection that helped stabilize his nanos and by none other than Naomi Hunter. When she made eggs for Snake as he’s recovering, Sunny takes easy offence when Snake remarks that he doesn’t remember the sun being so flat, which nearly sends the girl to tears.

When Naomi managed to send a video to the Nomad, informing Otacon and Snake that she was being held by Liquid Ocelot and forced to work for him in order to learn a way to control the SOP system, they started to prepare for how to save her. A map encrypted in Soliton Radar format was sent with the video which Sunny decoded it with ease, despite her lack of knowledge in how a Soliton Radar works. This starts to cycle of respect that Sunny has for Naomi, even before meeting her.

After Snake left to get Naomi, Sunny waited on board the Nomad with her uncle which was no different than usual. That is, until Otacon left in the helicopter which left the young girl alone on the Nomad to wonder what had made her uncle have to leave without her. When he returned he came back not only with Snake and Naomi, but a desperately wounded Raiden as well. During this time, Sunny and Naomi formed a bond, the older woman helping Sunny to learn to cook better and giving Sunny a blue flower from her shirt, tucked into the little girls hair.

Later, Sunny searches for information about Raiden through the net so that they can find a way to save him, and she ended up hacking the information from AT Security, the Patriots. Through this, Naomi showed her that Raiden’s blood needed to be dialyzed in order for them to save his life, and they could only find the equipment to perform the procedure from Dr. Madnar, the scientist who turned him into a cyborg ninja in the first place. Sunny immediately went back to her computer to look for more information. Naomi later found Sunny asleep at her computer, looking up information about her mother, Olga.

It wasn’t long after that Sunny left with Naomi to get the equipment from Dr. Madnar in order to begin Raiden’s treatment.

[Here is where things split off and Sunny would be pulled into Siren’s Port]

Naomi disappeared shortly after bringing the equipment back to the Nomad, but Sunny took over Raiden’s treatment for her anyway. Before she left, she entrusted Sunny with a plan that she had originally been planning to leave in Otacon’s hands.

She’s still taking care of Raiden when Snake returns to the Nomad, with half of his face burned up, after meeting with Big Mama. She also seems to really want to help Snake, but when he starts to suggest that Raiden go with him on his mission to kill Liquid, Sunny immediately turns to protect him from Snake, insisting that he needs to rest. Truthfully, she was right, but Raiden didn’t seem to want to believe that. He tries to get up to go with Snake, but only ends up showing that he’s way too weak to leave, and this also probably is the first time that Sunny was able to hear just how emotionally damaged Raiden had become. He ended up on the floor, and Snake helped her hook him back up to the dialysis machine.

After Snake had returned to his mission, Sunny gave Raiden the go ahead so that he could return to the field. She couldn’t have done this very willingly and definitely wouldn’t want him to go out into danger, but she seems to understand that Raiden and Snake had to go, no matter what she wanted. However, before Raiden left, Sunny asked her to give Naomi a message. That she had finally cooked sunny side up eggs properly.

In order to control the Patriot’s AI network, Ocelot used the genetic code from Big Boss. By doing this, he took over the SOP system. Every gun connected to the system in the world was disabled. His intention was to launch a nuclear warhead at the core of the Patriot’s AI network, JD, in space. He wanted to destroy JD, because another proxy AI, GW, would take over as the core AI. Ocelot made sure that GW was housed in Outer Haven so he would have complete control over the system. The Patriots would have eventually injected the nanomachines into the entire population, and not just soldiers, to exact total control. In order to completely ruin the Patriots, as well as stop Liquid, the AI’s had to be destroyed.

Naomi knew all of this, and so, she passed on a flash drive to Sunny while she was on the Nomad. This flash drive included all of the information she had on Outer Haven, as well as the incomplete program data for a computer virus. Sunny took the program and worked Emma’s old worm cluster into Naomi’s code. This created a virus that would cause the AI’s programs to attack itself, move onto the other parts of the AI and destroy that but it wouldn’t destroy the AI’s ability to continue providing the world with water, food, and transportation so the world wouldn’t suffer and wouldn’t be made to aware of the Patriots disappearance. This virus was called FOXALIVE. Now they just had to get the virus into the system.

Snake managed to get the virus to GW, as well as defeat Liquid Ocelot. The Patriots were subdued, without ruining the world. Otacon pondered if Sunny’s creation of the virus was her own way of avenging her mother.

Sunny later attends the wedding of Meryl and Akiba with Otacon, but Snake was gone. For the first time, Sunny really gets to be outside, and she even makes her first friend, in spite of the fact that she couldn’t speak his language. She wanted to give the MK III to him to him as a present. Sunny discovered that she adored being outside, and loved looking towards the sun. Otacon tells her that she can finally live in the outside world. She did admit to liking the outside world, but she then began to wonder about Snake. Otacon told her that Snake was sick, and he went away for a while, and that he needed time to rest. Sunny noticed that Otacon was choking up, and she asked him if he was crying. He denied it, but ended up putting his glasses on the wrong way, and making her laugh. She clings to his arm, and they watch the sun set together.

Point in Canon: Mid-MGS 4, during Third Sun when Sunny and Naomi are trying to find a dialysis machine for Raiden. It is around the time that Naomi and Sunny have found the location of Dr. Madnar’s lab and are preparing to recover the equipment from him, diplomatically of course.

Character Personality: Sunny is very sweet but shy and lacking in confidence, she’s always looking out for the well-being of those around her. She also has low self-esteem, becoming visibly hurt when certain comments are made towards her, even when they aren’t meant to be insulting in any way. She becomes particularly hurt when her cooking is brought into question, since she usually cooks for everyone without being asked. This especially applies to Snake and Otacon, who took care of her for so long, but it also applies heavily to Raiden as well. While she probably wouldn’t feel as much of a personal connection while helping other people, she would do it anyway. She does everything in her power to support them.

Sometimes she disagrees with the decisions her caretakers make, and if she does, she isn’t afraid to voice it, though for the longest time those protests were weakened by her stutter. Even though she’s a child, Sunny is amazingly mature for her age, understanding that the world doesn’t revolve around her, and that it can be horribly cruel at times. It’s very clear just how mature she is by the fact that she is really emotionally resilient. She took care of Raiden without being traumatized even though she’s only six. Even in tense situations, she can keep her composure. She also was able to handle the fact that she could not live outside of the Nomad. As a note, she doesn’t cry, at least not where anyone can see or hear her.

Part of her maturity definitely comes from her vast intellect. She is a genius who sometimes even surpasses Otacon’s skills in programming, and it reflects on how she handles difficult situations. Many times during the game, when everyone was faced with problems, such as how to save Raiden, Sunny immediately went into the net to hack the information from any source she could find. Absorbing information comes easily to her, and she also can adapt many problems with the knowledge she already has in order to find unique solutions for them, such as when she completed Naomi’s program by using parts of Emma’s program.

However, in the end, no matter how mature she is, she is still a child. Even though she has Otacon and Snake to keep her company on the Nomad, she still desperately searches for any information she can find on the mother she never knew. It’s clear that she really wants her mother, which is probably part of the reason why she became so close to Naomi when she had treated Sunny as if she were her daughter.

Sunny enjoys singing, as many children do, and playing some video games. However she can usually be found singing the elements of the Periodic Table or the numbers from the Fibonacci Sequence, rather than anything even close to Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. It can also be seen that she likes playing video games, perhaps something she got from her uncle, and has a PSP and a Playstation 3 in her room upstairs on the Nomad.

Character Plans: Sunny is just a child, so she’ll be looking for her Uncle Hal or Snake. Being alone is very hard for her so the odds of her getting lost or upset when she can’t find her family will only make things harder for her. She usually just stays with her uncle, since he and Snake basically raised her.

I c-can’t believe Uncle Hal got me a c-cell phone. I don’t t-talk to anybody except him and S-Snake really.

[She starts playing with the ringtones, smiling at some of them.]

I wonder what kind of g-games are on it.

[Sunny goes into the games and makes a face.]

T-tetris? Uncle Hal? I can reprogram t-this right? I know h-how to.

Third Person Sample

Sunny hugged her teddy bears tightly as she sat up in the kitchen. She had tried cooking for Snake and Uncle Hal, but Snake had once again been mean about it. The little girl rubbed her eyes and sniffed a little bit before setting her bears against the wall and going over to the stove and pulling her stool over to try again. Naomi had shown her how to cook better, so she decided to imitate was Naomi had done and set her little Kerotan clock for a minute before placing the cover on the frying pan and singing.

“One one, two three, five eight thirteen twenty-one, thirty-four, fifty-five, eighty-nine, one forty-four, two thirty-three, three seventy-seven…” Sunny hummed to herself as Kerotan went off and she quickly shut him off and took the cover off the frying pan with a pleased smile. She quickly pulled them off the pan and placed them on a plate next to the stove. Maybe she had been putting to much thought into cooking all this time, she was so used to computer programs, hacking and helping to make the Mark Two or something with Otacon.

Grabbing the plate, she hurried over to the stairs, taking one step at a time. It had become a habit more than anything really, plus she didn’t want to risk dropping the plate. When she reached the bottom, she went over to Otacon and put the plate down next to his computer and smiled brightly.

“Look, I m-made them right! All by myself t-too!”
