I really don't abide the smug Ann Arbor people folks who want $8/gallon gas prices to try to get us to ride bikes more.

I have to comment on this. I live in Ann Arbor (basically) and I think the people who take that position are classist assholes. I can't say enough bad things about that position.

OMG--THANK YOU!! I've given up trying to talk reason to folks. I once even got into it about how my teacher's aide makes like $14/hour (and remember, we only get paid for 35 hour weeks, 44 weeks per year) and how he has to drive from the north side of town to the SW side where school is. In other words, if gas was $8 per gallon, it would probably cost him an hour's worth of work EVERY DAY to drop his daughter off at school, come to work, pick her up and go home. And the people I was talking to (well, emailing to) *just didn't get it*. They started talking about alternative ways to get to work--there ARE no other ways in Detroit. In fact, his car broke down once and he tried to take the bus. He got to school at like noon, after starting his journey at 7. (Our principal drove him home). Okay, I'd better stop...but let me tell you it is so nice to hear someone else feels the same way!!
