yet another educational oppurtunity
Until recently, I'd never heard of cradle cap. Ah, that was bliss.
Cradle cap is a common infant problem. It is thought to arise because of a common misconception regarding the "soft spot." The soft spot, or fontanelle, is the area on the top of the baby's skull where the bones have not yet grown together and ossified as they do in adulthood. Many parents feel that the soft spot should be protected to the point that they fail to wash the area. As skin scales and other residue collects on the scalp, it can form a crusted material known as "cradle cap."[17] The skin underlying the encrustation may be vesicular, irritated, and weeping, requiring oral or topical prescription antibiotic therapy. For this reason, the child with cradle cap should be seen by a pediatrician. Once the situation is resolved, judicious washing of the scalp should prevent the problem.
