Argh at the government

It's really not healthy for me to RAGE over my toast  in the morning, but sweet lord, I can't help it.

I HATE the bloody government fucking up our country! They just raised the GST from 12.5% to 15%, making life all that little bit more expensive. And why did they do this? So they could afford to give the big earners, the over $120,000 a year ( Read more... )

I fully agree! In fact, I came onto LJ to write a rant pretty much like this.

I'd agree with the rise in GST if they'd done it properly. They could've organised it to help solve several problems at once, like making NZ grown fruits and veges and NZ produced meat and milk exempt from GST so that people would buy them - it encourages healthy eating and making better choices for the environment as well as supporting NZ producers rather than overseas ones.

And then they could raise the GST higher on the things that they really don't want to encourage, like cigarettes.

And it's ironic, because do you remember a few years ago when Labour introduced tax cuts and National mocked them, saying it was barely enough each week for a block of cheese? They're giving the lowest income earners even less back now, and it's going to cost more to buy the cheese...

I definitely agree with you about how they should have made certain things exempt from GST - not so sure about adding *more* tax to cigarettes, which are taxed to the ground as it is, but I could be convinced. I imagine having different rates of GST would make things more complicated though.

But I certainly agree that they've gone about EVERYTHING all the wrong ways.

And haha, yeah, I totally remember that comment. Hypocrites.
