Went out and bought a new 320Gb hard drive to go in an external case. This will be the backup for my photos drive. It's bascially the only practical way of backing up this amount of data. I've still got to find a useful way of doing an incremental update, rather than just let it overwrite the contents each time. Cost of drive was just under $140 ( Read more... )

Rsync is great for disk-disk backups, if you just want the backup to be made identical to the original very quickly and efficiently.

This is for the PC. I still have an old PowerPC lurking under the desk but it only gets used for my old favourite games. I've still got Pagemaker loaded on it and tried using it the other day but it isn't a nice way of doing things. The biggest issue is that the Mac doesn't have USB so I don't have a handy way of transferring files from it. I managed to corrupt one external hard disk trying to do move files across so I don't want to do that again in a hurry.

I use this:

It's a fairly old program now, but works brilliantly once it's setup. You can set it up to only copy files that have changed. And also deletes files on the backup that are no longer on the original.
