The coughing fit probably reduced the flow of blood to your brain, and if you were already light-headed, that'd be enough to do it... I remember asking my Human Development teacher about it in year 12 once when I noticed that you can get light headed after coughing hard. We assumed between us that the muscles tightening around the neck probably constricted the coroted (sp?) artery.
