Lunchtime shopping, cheap books

I needed new lenses for my glasses, so I decided to try a new shop that has opened up near work. Normally I wouldn't bother as South Yarra is not exactly a cheap location. Well blow me down, not only were new lenses just $110 (I had been quoted $160 in Forest Hill) but they had my prescription in stock and could do them in 30 minutes. So I left my ( Read more... )

Thanks for the recommendation! This place is really close to us. However, I can't remember the last time my glasses weren't in the +US$300 range thanks to really bad eyesight requiring ultrathin lenses :->

I'm not that bad, +4.5 in one eye and +3.5 in the other and it has been very stable. I went and had a full test last week and the prescription hadn't changed from my last test in 1997. I was fairly certain that would be the case but really wanted to know whether there were any other issues as my mother had cataracts in both eyes replaced when she was in her early 60's. Fortunately there was nothing to worry about.

Wanted to thank you yet again for the recommendation. I damaged my regular glasses in a recent accident and my optometrist said the replacement pair would be ready in a few days but it's been a week and counting. So today I went in and asked for my prescription, using an upcoming trip to the US as a reason. I went straight from their office to Cal Eyewear. Much to my amazement given my strong prescription (-5.75 in one eye, -5.25 in the other, plus astigmatism), they were able to make a pair for me in 25 minutes flat for a total of $150 for the frame and lenses! (To give you an idea, the thinner-lens metal-framed pair on order at my regular optometrist costs $272 out of pocket plus $250 covered by insurance.) I owe you a drink the next time we're at a con together :->
