I decided to go along for the Ride. James Patterson's Maximum Ride, that is, but it's not without its drawbacks.
The story of Maximum Ride and her flock of hybrids (part human, part bird) is told in numerous books which go on and on and on. A condensed version with quicker plot development would've saved me a great deal of frustration. However, my biggest pet peeve with the books are the use of idioms that are more appropriate for someone of Mr. Patterson's age rather than today's teens and preteens. That, along with the too convenient and sudden development of additional abilities other than their already established avian ones, is jarring.
I do like the characters, however, with the exception of Angel who is just too...perfect. My favorite character isn't Max, but Fang. He's dark and mysterious and is probably a throwback to my Batman fixation, I'm sure. But he's interesting in that you don't know everything about him up front. Not like the others.
So, does anything good come from reading Maximum Ride? I'm not sure. Fang kept me interested enough to get through three of the books. But I find myself skipping pages to hurry the story along. Not a good sign.
