Being present
I've been doing general practice veterinary work since 2007, as a 100% relief provider (the substitute veterinarian) since 2008. Last year I added emergency room practice as the money is generally good and I think quickly on my feet. Restarting (again)
There have been lots of changes since my last post. FB took over for a while as it had the critical mass of colleagues, classmates, and friends. What it lacks is depth which is both a feature and a bug. Cases to check up on tomorrow...
1) 12-yo MC Labrador, BCS 8/9 originally presented for coughing, subsequently diagnosed with DCM and hypothyroidism. Treated with furosemide, enalapril, soloxine, and recommendation for echocardiogram.

Working Life
Bought: a second house in San Diego. Cash flow: sucks. California relief market: depressed and depressing. Solution: Extended licensing.
So here I am working on the Right Coast again, this time in Poolseville, Maryland until the end of July. It's a really satisfying clinic where the shortest appointment block is 20 minutes. Anything with an issue ( Read more... ) -
We have a second house - god help us :-)
Early in the year a long-time family friend of martha-pomes let us know that they wanted to sell their home and retire to Nevada. The house is ideal in many ways: it's across the street from her aging parents, it's in a relatively upscale neighborhood in San Diego, and while the decor, kitchen, and bath are dated, the house is structurally sound (mostly). An interesting case
I love drugs. They make the risk of the hazardous things I do manageable. Anytime I consider doing something with an animal in a quick and dirty way I ask myself, "Will this put my assistant at unacceptable risk?" If there's any doubt I muzzle, and if there's still a doubt after that I'll require sedation. Last night was one of those cases.

The Vacation is Over (in more ways than one)
I've been doing a large amount of relief veterinary work out of town from San Diego. Necessarily I lose touch with the details of what's happening at home when I'm only there for one Sunday a week.
