Book review, The Saxon Stories by Bernhard Cornwell (Spoiler: Alfred the Great wins).

B and I have been watching The Last Kingdom. As a Wessex girl I thoroughly appreciate the story of how Wessex stood against assorted Vikings when the rest of the UK had fallen. Ah! I'm glad Cornwell is going on writing this stuff. I really enjoyed the Sharpe books, and was so-so about the American civil war ones[1] but tried one of his other series and couldn't get into it at all. I'm not sure if I should try again or not.

[1] Somehow I accepted the Napoleonic wars as a natural part of history, and cheered for a protagonist on either side to succeed. But in the American civil war, I wasn't enthused by the military victories, I just wanted it to be over.

I did think the Arthurian ones were interesting, but I read them at a time I'd read too many Arthurian subversions.
