He finally made his way back and started for his room. Each step was a battle of wills, every trudging step became harder and harder. On the second floor he looked from door to door. The Doctor...he could hear him with Chase. House was already a flight behind him. But Ace, jesus, she'd just disappeared and he had barely noticed. So wrapped up in his own stuff.
"Ace?" he asked, pushing her door open a little. "Did you come back?"
It only took her a second to wipe her face, and she was thankful for the dark of no electric lighting. "Yeah. Yeah, Jack, I came back. Are you okay?" She shifted out of her bed, her arms wrapped around herself as she stood up.
No, Ace. He's not 'okay'.
Her voice was only a little rough, and she cleared her throat, actually doing moderately well on keeping a handle on things.
She looked down. "Yeah." She'd not been so quiet since he'd met her, and she restrained herself from moving forward, from hugging him as she could. She was trying not to think of it, trying not to remember the sound. There was something in those screams - it was someone dying, something that Ace had heard too often.
"Jack? Do you want to stay here tonight?" She finally did move, and her hand reached up to touch his cheek.
