#4 isn't far from my old stomping grounds, it is a nice area, and the R train will get you to some decent places (though I have nothing positive to say about the equipment - ugly wallpaper and faux-wood paneling make my inner gay man cry . Hell they make the outer one cry too... )

Also don't discount the fun you can have in the outer boroughs - skating in Corona park and the Queens museum can kill a day & with the right guy it can be a fun date.

Downsides? Three words: LGA Approach Path, but I think you're far enough south that you're in a quiet spot :)

Steinway and Northern is more long island city, and while it has some nice things, the movie therater it is also not one of the better parts of the astoria area. Make sure you check out the neighborhood well before you you sign.
