Haruki Murakami's Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World, and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle also by Murakami.

Italo Calvino's If On A Winter's Night A Traveler... is good too.

Right now I am reading "The Boat in the Evening" by Tarjel Vesaas
It's really good. I am still half asleep though and cannot think of
anything else to recommend :P

The Life of Pi by Yann Martel

The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger

The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald.

I know the last two are classics and thus probably 'usual', but I enjoyed them, and they're good.

The Alchemist by Paulo Choelo is also supposed to be good. I still have to read it.

It means 'knot'

Also look at books written by Jostein Gaarder. My favorites are Sophie's world, The Christmas Mystery and The Solitaire Mystery.
