How To Make Homemade Vanilla Extract -- Easy, Fun, Cheap(er) & Tasty!

I read about making your own vanilla extract a while ago -- it's cheaper, that's for sure, and tastier! So when I ran out this weekend, I knew this was the time. Read the full "How-To" here, she gives extra tips, but it's really simple:

1. About 1 cup of vodka or rum, 2 or 3 vanilla beans. (Warning, I bought 2 vanilla beans at the health food store for 7 bucks. They ain't cheap, but neither is real vanilla extract...)

1. Slice the beans open to reveal their "caviar".

1. Drop them in a clean jar (I cut them in half first).

1. Fill with vodka/rum. Screw the top on, shake it and store the jar somewhere cool and dark for 8 weeks. Shake it occasionally, when you remember (a couple times a week).

Best part of this is: If you occasionally add a new bean (once a year or so) and top it off with vodka, this supply will continue pretty much forever. Strain out old beans if/when you feel like it - they don't go bad. How awesome can this BE??? Very awesome. Yes.

The "Cure" for my Fly-Aways and Itchy Scalp (maybe????)

I posted earlier about how shitty my hair feels right now. I did some wacky research on the web, and I've decided to combine wisdoms:

• 1/2 avocado
• couple tablespoons grapeseed oil (because I need my remaining olive oil to cook, dammit)
• 1 egg
• 1 tablespoon white vinegar

1. Combine all ingredients (I mashed the avocado with the back of a fork, but a food processor might be better - I've got chunks in my hair now....)

1. Apply to head, working it into scalp. Look a BIT like the Grinch. Just a bit. I chose this picture JUST so you could be amused by the face. I can hear Anna giggling now...

Okay, I'm done for now, I think. I'm amused. I'll let you know if my hair turns green or if it just....doesn't work. Right now it's feeling heavy and like it's drying...and apparently it attracted the only fruit fly in the house....(where did HE come from)
