Fusina is doing wonderfully and I couldn’t be happier. I’m even happy enough that I can admit…I don’t know what I would call it, but there’s an admission in here somewhere.

I don’t think I overreacted - it was a serious injury - but I can see now even better that they (being the local healer, the family, etc.) had things a lot more under control than I was able to give them credit for at the outset. It’s like I said before, I knew this wasn’t the first time a bone had been broken, it definitely won’t be the last, it’s just that it was her leg…and it exposed every protective instinct I have within me.

A friend came over a few days ago and helped out with one of the educational murals we’re doing at the school. Per customs, because she’s a visitor and new to the village, we had to go around and greet all of the sub-chiefs and warriors and elders and then the main chief. Fusina was running around the compound all day, so I decided to take her with us and give her a little exercise. She wore out more quickly than normal, but I was more than happy to toss her onto my shoulders. My hair’s getting longer, so she’s even got better ‘handlebars’ to direct me with with now.

By the time we got back home that evening, she was exhausted, but she did well - walking, squatting, moving side to side for all the old men who needed to see for themselves that she was, indeed, healed. I had my fair share of “See, I told you she didn’t need the clinic!”s, but I was in too good of a mood to even want to raise any points otherwise.

The mural was finished, the sun was shining, Fusina was walking - nothing could’ve been better.

site, fusina
