Peter/Claire and Harry/Hermione: The Hero and Heroine

No offense to those who ship Harry/Ginny, but I feel that there are more similarities between Paire and H/Hr rather than H/G and Paire. This essay is to explain these similarities.

Peter/Claire and Harry/Hermione: The Hero and Heroine
A Comparison Essay by pcdarkrose

Peter and Claire’s relationship like Harry and Hermione’s is platonic. You may not want to see their love in a romantic sense, but it cannot be denied that their connection is deep, strong, and very beautiful.

Both the Peter-Claire relationship and the Harry-Hermione relationship play roles of the hero and the heroine. In their first encounter, Peter is the knight in shining armor who rescues Claire from the typical bad guy. In their second meeting, Claire wakes Peter from death by pulling out from his skull a piece of glass; a scene reminiscent to Sleeping Beauty.

Harry is Hermione's knight in shining armor when he grabs Ron with the intention of making sure Hermione is safe from the troll, and then rescuing her from the aggressive creature. Likewise, Hermione saves him in each book.

In the first book, she researches information they need to know about the stone. Without her quick thinking and intellect, Harry and Ron would not have accomplished much. In the second book her information on the Baskilisk prepared Harry for the Chamber of Secrets. In the third book again, her quick wit and resourcefulness help Harry save Buckbeak and Sirius. If Harry had followed her advice, she and Harry could have prevented Sirius’ death. So basically in each book she saved him using her knowledge and wisdom.

Peter and Claire click instantly they do not tease or mock playfully with one another. This is exactly like Harry and Hermione. There is no awkwardness between Harry/Hermione or Peter/Claire but rather a sense of understanding and devotion.

Milo Ventimiglia explains to Paire fans that Peter and Claire had in a “mental, cerebral” sense “hooked up” by sharing an "emotional", "nurturing", and "protective relationship".

JK Rowling explains to the fandom that “Harry and Hermione are very platonic” and that Harry “needs Hermione badly”.

+Closest to heaven that I'll ever be+

The first time we see Claire in the first episode she shows her friend, Zach, her ability to heal. She could do this in a number of ways, but she chooses falling. Falling is the closest she can come to flying, which makes her feel the most alive. Because her wounds can heal she does not feel "normal", but different, set apart from other humans. By feeling death or anything close to it, like pain, she feels less like a "freak", and more able to relate to other people.

In parallel Peter falls attempting to fly. He dreams to fly because he feels that he is meant for something more in his life. He feels that by flying he can fulfill a void in his otherwise empty life and feel the most alive, but because he can’t fly yet we watch him, like Claire, fall. The attempt to fly is when they both feel alive.

Flying is also essential for Harry/Hermione. In the third book, Harry says his first happy memory was the first time he flew on his broomstick. In the third book when he flew with Buckbeak he feels ethereal, happiness, and very much alive though he was going through a depression during this year. When rescuing Sirius, Hermione joins Harry in flight on Buckbeak. Hermione shares with Harry this experience of flying and it releases her momentary fears and makes her feel alive.

+I don't want the world to see me+

In the beginning, Claire wants to ignore what she can do (regenerate) with the help of Zach she learns to accept it, but she still feels different and inhuman. When she sees Peter can heal himself too, she understands that she is "not alone anymore".

In Fallout she shares, "All this time, I thought it was just me. Now there's you."

Hermione experiences her own form of ostracism-not having any friends-- until Harry (who dragged Ron with him) rescued her from the troll. She no longer is alone because she finds companionship in Harry and Ron. Her new friend Harry gives her hope by being the “boy who lived”. Not only has he escaped death, but she sees him as a means to a better future, a savior to defeat evil which threatens the world in which they live.

+I'll twist my fate, just to feel you+

Before "save the cheerleader, save the world", Peter was longing for a purpose in his life and she gave him one. Her painting gave him his beginning mission "to be somebody". Before Peter showed Claire she was not a freak or alone, she did not understand that she was meant for a higher purpose, as she explains in The Hard Part, “When I met you I felt like I was a part of something.”

This quote applies to how Hermione feels about Harry as well. Hermione helps Harry fulfill his destiny. Before Hermione met Harry, she was an “insufferable know-it-all” and would have only used her power of knowledge in the classroom. However, when she and Harry become friends she begins to apply her wisdom in saving the world from Voldemort.

+There Goes My Hero+

Both Hermione and Claire hero-worship their saviors. In Fallout, Claire clearly hero-worships Peter, thinking he has all the answers, feeling safe with him. Hermione also hero worships Harry, in the first book before he meets Voldemort for the first time, she says that he is "a great wizard” and that he possesses important traits like “bravery” and “friendship”.

Hermione learns in the second book that Harry is very human seeing the emotional toll that being “the boy who lived” places on him, and the frustration he feels in hearing voices only he can hear. In The Hard Part, Claire comes to understand that her savior is not idealistic having "no idea what's going to happen", and that he is very human feeling just as “scared” as she is.

In How To Stop An Exploding Man, Peter goes to Nathan who Claire feels is not on their side. She argues with Peter believing that Nathan can't be trusted hoping that he will listen to her. Claire needs Peter to be that knight in shining armor again so badly because he's the only one who has never let her down or lied to her.

In the fifth book, Hermione needs Harry to be that golden hero who does not fail and let her down. Hermione points out that Sirius may not be in trouble, and that Harry’s need to rescue others is his greatest strength and greatest weakness. Hermione hopes that he will listen to her needing to believe that Harry values her opinions and thoughts.

Hermione understands that Harry’s “saving people thing” is a burden as does Claire and this is shown when she argues with Nathan that Peter could not cope being responsible for the death of millions.

In the end, Peter/Claire and Harry/Hermione reach a sort of partnership, a comradeship based on trust and love. Claire and Hermione learn to accept the realities, setting aside their naive perception of their heroes.

+You are my Heroine+

In The Hard Part, Peter expresses how he hero worships Claire. He believes her to be invincible, and that her useful power will keep her from being hurt.

CLAIRE: Nathan can keep me safe.
PETER: Safe?! You can't get hurt!

In the same way Harry, unknowingly, hero worships Hermione and believes her to be invincible, always there when he needs her. He relies on her power of knowledge to advise him, save him. He feels that because he needs her she will always be there. Peter makes the same assumption relying on Claire’s regenerative power, to save him from destroying New York City.

Harry sees Hermione as his salvation from causing the deaths of loved ones in the war against  Voldemort while Peter sees Claire as his salvation from causing the deaths of innocent casualties.

If it were not for Claire’s ability to regenerate, Peter would not be alive. Claire heals Peter. If it were not for Hermione’s gift of intelligence, Harry would not be alive. Hermione heals Harry emotionally when he feels hopeless.

+Enablers+

If it were not for Claire, Nathan and Peter would not have become heroes. Peter became one when he sacrificed himself to protect another, namely Claire, from Sylar. Nathan would never have helped Peter save the world if, in How To Stop An Exploding Man, Claire had not have clarified that Peter would not be “able to live with himself” if he killed .07 percent of the world’s population.

Claire was the foundation for both of them to become heroes. In the same way Hermione is the foundation for Harry to become a hero. She uses the power of words (like Claire did in convincing Nathan) to encourage and advise Harry in during his journey as a hero.

+I'll stay with you, walls will fall before we do+

Both couples loyally stood by each other’s side from the very beginning. In the fourth book when Ron questioned whether Harry had put his name in the Goblet of Fire Hermione did not doubt Harry's answer. Ron turned his back on Harry, but Hermione believed in Harry. When Harry wanted to go save Sirius even though Hermione pointed out some flaws in his belief, she followed him anyway. Hermione always trusts Harry.

Claire remained loyal to Peter. In The Hard Part, though every thing in her told her to run, he convinced her to follow him. Claire always trusts Peter. Even when he betrayed her she still trusted in him that’s why she argued in Peter's defense and eventually converted Nathan. Trusting Peter is why she went back to him despite his betrayal. In the end she learns that Peter had been right to trust Nathan just as she had been right to trust Peter.

“Peter Petrelli is the only person I know I can trust-more than you. He cares about me.” - Claire Bennet

Likewise, Hermione always trusts in Harry. There friendship is based on trust. In a scene that reminiscent of Aladdin, Hermione asks Harry if he trusts her, and he takes her hand without hesitation.

Hermione relies on Harry for protection, and safety. In the third book, as Harry and Hermione run through the forbidden forest they hold on to each other closely. In the fifth book, Hermione clutches on to Harry for safety from Gromp. Claire relies on Peter for protection as well. In “.07%” she expresses to a lifeless Peter, “You're the only one that made me feel safe.”

+We'll make it anywhere away from here+

Peter and Claire run when faced with problems. When Claire is in danger or does not feel safe she runs. It is all she knows. When her only friend Zach loses his memory, she runs. When Sylar attempts to kill her, she runs (straight into Peter). Peter, believing he’ll explode the city, attempts to flee NYC, until he meets Claude. According to Claire, in the Hard Part, Peter always "keep[s] running back to [Nathan]”.

When Claire discovers Nathan is with Thompson she tells Peter “run look the other way”. Claire and Peter run away from Sylar who is spying on them in the streets. The couple runs from the FBI arresting Ted. When she believes Peter betrayed her, she runs away (before Angela catches her). When Peter discovers Claire left the car, he runs searching for her. Claire jumps out of a thirty story building and runs back to him because she knows that he needs her to save him from exploding New York City.

Running is a common motif for Harry and Hermione as well. In the second book, Hermione runs to Harry very excited and proud of him for finding the clue in her hand and defeating Tom Riddle. In the third book, Harry and Hermione spend a great amount of time running in the forbidden forest.  In the fifth book at the Ministry of Magic, Harry grabbed only Hermione’s cloak as they ran from the death eaters. Throughout that night together with Neville they ran through several rooms in the Department of Mysteries.

+You bleed just to know you're alive+

At the end of Homecoming, Claire is covered in blood just like Peter. Harry/Hermione also become covered in blood after dealing with Umbridge and Gromp in the fifth book while in the forbidden forest.

The blood shed by both Peter and Claire symbolizes the Petrelli blood that they both share. The blood also represents the rebirth they both experience. Peter is brought to life physically after he falls off the building and mentally the empty life he once lived is gone, and a new meaningful life as a hero begins.

Claire’s feeling jaded, alone, and hopeless is brought back to life when she meets him. He promises hope, and because he is “like” her she no longer feels inhuman. because he had been longing for a life with a purpose and she gives him this. She is the key to his destiny in making him a hero and able to “save the world”.

The blood on Harry and Hermione represents how they are one life, soul mates that become one and share the same blood. However the blood also symbolizes, like Peter and Claire, rebirth. Hermione brings Harry to life mentally by awakening him to realities that is essential for him to be aware of so that he can fulfill his destiny, and defeat Voldemort.

Hermione, like Claire, is the key in giving him the means to become a hero. Hermione brings Harry to life by healing him, comforting him when he feels dead inside. Harry brings Hermione to life by giving her a sense of purpose, and that purpose is to stand by him and help him through his trials.

+Cried a river and drowned the whole world+

Tears is a motif for both Peter/Claire and Harry/Hermione. Both Hermione and Claire cry many, many times. Peter wipes away Claire’s tears while Harry causes Hermione’s tears.

Peter’s hands are capable of destroying. Yet in contrast his hand brushes away Claire's tears healing her emotionally. His hands are capable of mass murder, but his touch brings her comfort anyway. Hermione cries because she is worried about Harry and fears for his safety. She is greatly anxious about his state of mind.

+Within my heart of memory, a perfect love that you gave to me+

In S1 before Peter loses his memory in S2, and forgets who he is (in more ways than one) he exclaimed, “You were wrong. I don’t have to cut her [Claire] out. I have to remember her! How she made me feel-that’s how I-“

In the same way, in the fifth book when Voldemort possesses Harry, Harry has to remember Ron and Hermione because the love he has for them and they have for him is what makes him powerful.

+Black and Blue+

The black and blue colors used in the last two episodes of season 1 when Peter and Claire attempt to save New York can be compared to the blue and black colors that would be visually seen in the third book when Harry and Hermione were attempting to save Buckbeak and Sirius in the forbidden forest.

+One and the same, just like water+

There’s a sense of ‘two of us against the world’ with both pairings. Both Peter/Claire and Harry/Hermione are partners, sharing power equally, and working well together when teamed up. Both dynamic duos are referred to as an entity.

Harry and Hermione have been teamed together in the fifth book in the Department of Ministry, and in the Forbidden Forest. In the first book, together they defeated three rooms without Ron. In the fourth book, when Ron and Harry were angry with one another and not talking Harry and Hermione spent a lot of time together solving the golden egg clue. Whereas Peter and Claire teamed together to prevent Sylar from taking Claire's power, and then later the duo worked together to prevent an exploding man from destroying New York City.

Peter is defined by two people: Nathan and Claire, as Harry is defined by two people: Ron and Hermione.
