It's a total work in progress, and I'm not certain I'm going to be able to make it properly smooth without trashing my entire concept and dropping SVG for the tag, but this is pretty awesome already for using nothing but official web standards. (no Flash or Java)

That's 27.13125 minutes worth of retransmits between Apache and the MySQL server...

To draw a single page of the Fanime pre-registration webapp, I am having to do an incredible amount of back-end database searching. Ruby On Rails make this fairly trivial, but the amount of queries being automagically generated are kind of frightening.

How anybody uses PayPal successfully is beyond me. I have yet to get their merchant services to do ANYTHING besides giving me this error. After 4 page views. This is demonstrably not a problem in my code. Their suggestion on how to deal with this (as a customer) is particularly hilarious, too: "Meh, just check your email. Ok, Miracle Fruit sounds incredible. I really need to go buy a pack of the freeze-dried tablets...

So I finally get through the mess that is sandbox.paypal.com, with a set of test accounts made, and several days of ruby code to submit transactions to paypal, and... it fails. And not only is it failing, it's failing in a way that is provably PayPal's fault. The transaction gets handed off to their site just fine, and it lets me go 90% of the way ( Read more... )

So the videos from Assembly 2009 are out, and they are surprisingly good this year.

I'm particularly impressed with this one. Things like metaballs used to be the cool new technique in these demos... apparently we are now so far beyond that the thing to have is full fluid dynamics calculations in realtime:

So my Nintendo DS-Lite finally died (I've actually worn out some of the buttons), and so I got a DSi. Of course, this broke the R4DS I've been using, and necessitated buying a new flashcart that uses one of the new hacks to get around the changes Nintendo made in the DSi.
