Kai thought it to be quite a pointless habit. He didn’t really have a problem with it, exactly; perhaps he was only slightly bothered by it. It made him think there were certain mental issues with the small vocalist but he was used to keeping comments like those to himself to avoid hurting the pint-sized glitter monstrosity. If he ever let Ruki know something like that, the man would go completely insane.

But Kai couldn’t help letting his mind wander back to those thoughts; he only became more bothered and more curious as he let time pass by without saying anything. He tried to analyze the issue himself without consulting anyone; no conclusion was exactly reached from his attempts to figure out what could possibly be going on inside Ruki’s mind.

He also tried to analyze the problem with the help of his fellow band mates who were not really any help at all. Instead, they made his mind lose all the precious research and thoughts that it had recollected itself after a few sessions of wandering when no one was around.

“I think you’re the only one that cares about Ruki’s sunglasses issue here, Kai.” Reita snorted before inhaling a deep breath of nicotine through a nearly empty cancer stick. Kai rested his back against the wall before looking at the night sky outside of their recording studio.

“But why would he wear those things inside?” Kai’s voice strained the worry and deep thinking that he had put into the situation, making Uruha cackle before shoving him slightly to the right.

“I think you should get some sleep.” Uruha said in a worried, yet almost sarcastic voice. “Go home.” The guitarist only nudged him now and nodded off towards Kai’s vehicle. Kai had agreed to avoid being teased anymore, but he really didn’t want to leave. He also could have sworn he heard his name while Reita and Uruha laughed as he walked away.

Ruki was a fashionable man. He wore clothes that was always overloaded with glitter and styled by people that everyone wished they could know. His hair was always nicely done; Kai had never seen it out of place or flat as he had seen the rest of his friends. He didn’t always wear make-up, just foundation to cover his sunspots and that dreaded, large birthmark on his chin that bothered him. Ruki was an absolutely perfect person when it came to beauty.

And then his ridiculous habit came into hand.

Kai couldn’t help contemplating constantly on why Ruki wore his sunglasses inside. They were called “sunglasses” for a reason. You only wear sunglasses when there is sun around where you are. If you wear sunglasses where there is no sun, then there’s no point on wearing them.

He had always wanted to explain his well thought out theory to Ruki, but he knew the shorter man would get offended if he even mentioned it for a second. No one had ever mentioned it except for a few men during interviews. Ruki had a fake smile on when they mentioned things like that and Kai could tell. Ruki told them off or simply ignored the question with his usually charming laughter.

Kai had never seen him without glasses on inside, except for concerts, or certain talk shows they had been on. In some of them, he still wore them. And he always started out his concerts with his sunglasses on, and took them off while he sang.

The problem was in Kai’s head during the whole night that he wasn’t even able to catch a tiny bit of sleep. He hated it when his curiosity would drive him into sleepless nights and too many swallows of alcohol. He was just the kind of person who was largely impacted when things like that came to mind, unlike other people. Some would even call him crazy rather than think Ruki was.

He sat in the couch of the recording studio, sorting through paperwork quickly so he could go back home and actually get some rest. It wasn’t that early in the morning, well maybe for some, but Kai didn’t think 9 am was too bad of a time. He wished he had actually slept so he could be more energetic and could focus easily.

Kai glanced at the clock and took a sip of coffee from his mug. It was almost 9:30 am and Ruki hadn’t arrived to the studio. He looked through the glass while a recording session was going on. Aoi strummed his guitar a few times before actually playing what he was supposed to do. Uruha and Reita watched his fingers while nodding in approval. There was a man messing with the sound board and he was nodding off as well.

“Where’s Ruki?” Kai stood up from his spot casually and stood next to Uruha, who was in a daze while he watched Aoi’s playing.

“I don’t know.” Simple answer. Something Kai was expecting from Uruha.

He didn’t want to worry too much on what could have happened to Ruki so that he didn’t show up to their scheduled recording session. Ruki never missed something like that so Kai guessed it would have been something very serious. He texted Ruki and asked what was wrong and why he hadn’t arrived.

A few minutes later, his inbox remained empty. He glared down at his screen before picking up some of his things and walking quickly to the parking lot. He didn’t want to run so he didn’t seem too eager, but he wanted to make it where he wanted to go fast. He was going to visit Ruki and deeply hoped that the man hadn’t died overnight or something.

Ruki’s apartment wasn’t really that far from the recording studio, which Kai was grateful for. The drive was extremely short and it helped Kai calm his nerves a little bit. Get his mind off the situation. He really needed that.

Kai knocked on Ruki’s door. No reply.

A louder knock was heard.

This time, there was a reply.

“Go away.”

“Ruki? Are you okay?”

Kai knocked harder and began shaking the doorknob violently in solemn hopes of getting the door open without Ruki’s assistance. That, of course didn’t happen, so the man stood outside the door for a good 20 minutes before he heard a creak of the door and saw a man in pajamas…with a paper bag over his head.

Kai didn’t laugh.

He wanted to laugh.

He REALLY wanted to laugh.

But he kept his comments and noises to himself so he wouldn’t hurt the vocalist’s feelings. He was glad that Ruki couldn’t really see anything through the paper bag; he was able to release a few smiles and not be questioned about them.

“Why didn’t you go to work today?” Kai’s question was short and it got to the point. Kai didn’t mean to make anything of it, but Ruki’s reaction was unexpected. The shorter man began bawling before going into his home and running to face plant on his couch. Kai went inside and shut the door before patting Ruki’s back.

“What’s wrong?”

“I…”

“Yes…” Kai’s voice was soothing; if you had heard him, you’d think he was talking to a baby girl.

“I…lost them.”

“Lost what?”

Ruki’s sobbing paused for a second as he lifted his head from the couch and changed position so he could breathe a little better. Kai waited patiently as he did so, staring at the paper bag as if he was staring at someone in the eye.

“My sunglasses.”

Kai stopped patting Ruki’s back and sat down on the couch. He didn’t want to make a big deal and tell his friend what a stupid excuse that was, whether he was thinking about it or not. He was thinking about it, though.

“Oh.”

“Kai, you don’t understand.”

“Oh, I don’t?”

Ruki sat up and Kai could almost swear that the paper bag was looking at him just like he was looking at it. And Ruki could see as if the bag had little cameras connected to Ruki’s eye sockets which enabled him to see the world through a different point of view.

“NO!”

“Oh.”

Ruki removed the paper bag to reveal a clean face with nothing on, messy hair, and thin little eyes that Kai could almost think Ruki was closing his eyes.

“CAN’T YOU SEE?!?!” Ruki pointed at all of his features while Kai admired them quietly; not making anything obvious at all and just acknowledging Ruki that he was able to see what was currently on his face.

“I do see.” Kai smiled. “You have eyes, a nose and a mouth. “

“No!” Ruki pointed at his features once again. “I’M UGLY!” Ruki melted down into a puddle on the floor, cringing in a sort of pain that Kai couldn’t exactly put into words, but it was a visible pain that he knew no one would want to experience.

“You’re ugly with or without your sunglasses.” Kai said sarcastically, only to receive a cold glower from Ruki’s red eyes.

“I need to find them, Kai.” Ruki got up and frantically looked and stuck his hand into different pieces of furniture. Kai got up and watched Ruki looking, but he didn’t look himself. “Why aren’t you helping?”

“Because this is pointless.” Kai commented. “They are just sunglasses.”

Ruki attacked Kai, pinning him down on the floor and receiving a scared whimper emerging from the depths of Kai’s throat and lips. He was about to punch the man before he remembered who he was and he just stared down at him.

“And your virginity is just your virginity.” Ruki stuck out his tongue. “And you’d be upset if you lost it.”

Kai had never really mentioned actually being with anyone. Never had he really had a girlfriend or had a partner or done anything. He never admitted things like that, but it was pretty obvious because of the way the drummer acted around girls.

He turned a deep shade of red before pushing off the vocalist and sitting down on the couch, casually looking around and avoiding catching Ruki’s eyes in his. Ruki sat down next to him and looked him in the eyes.

“My sunglasses hide my imperfections.” Ruki stated thoughtfully before looking down at his own hands and messing with his finely manicured nails. Kai looked at Ruki’s nails as well as he began picking at a tiny plastic jewel that was glued down on the paint.

“Is that why you wear them all the time?” Kai’s mind was taking in the information like a vacuum. His questions were finally being answered.

“Hai.” Ruki nodded before looking at a painting on the wall. “Do you like sunsets?”

There was clearly a sun rising from the mountains in the painting, but Ruki seemed to have mistaken what was actually in the picture. Kai didn’t mention this in a mean way so he wouldn’t upset the vocalist. He never liked upsetting the vocalist.

“That’s a sunrise.”

“No. It’s a sunset.” Ruki pointed at the shifting colors. “The sun is way too up to be a sunset.”

“The sunset is beginning.” Kai stated before chewing inside his cheek. “Maybe if you didn’t have your sunglasses on all the time, you could actually see what is going on around you.” He felt as if the remark was cold, so he sugar-coated it with a laugh.

“If you weren’t drinking coffee all the time then maybe you would smell a little better.” Ruki looked at the drummer and pinched his nose.

“I smell fine.”

“You smell like old people.”

“Like you smell so good.” Kai chuckled. Ruki tilted his head to the side and nodded.

“Hai, I do!” Ruki grinned. “Here, smell me.”

“I’m not going to smell you.”

“Why not?”

“That’s awkward.”

“You’re awkward.”

Kai nodded in agreement before leaning in and placing his nose on the vocalist’s neck. He felt Ruki stiffen as he absorbed the wonderful aromas that were leaving the younger man’s delicate, pale skin.

“Lavender.”

“Yes.” Ruki smiled and sat up. “I do smell good.”

“Don’t wear your sunglasses anymore.” Kai blurted out. Ruki thought it was a random remark but he simply tilted his head.

“Why not?”

“You’re funnier without them on.”

“I’m not perfect.”

“Being boring is perfect?”

Ruki thought about it for a second as he rubbed his thumb against his lips.

“No.”

“Then don’t wear them.”

Ruki looked out the window.

“You should smile more.” He whispered. He didn’t intend of making it a whisper but the quiet was starting to feel really nice. “You look better when you smile.”

“I smile enough.”

“You’re always drinking coffee like an adult.” Ruki looked at Kai before finally removing the jewel off of his fingernail.

“I am an adult.”

“But adults don’t smile.”

“I smile.”

“Now you do.”

Kai closed his eyes and nodded in agreement.

“Don’t wear your sunglasses.”

“Don’t drink coffee.”

They shook hands as if making a deal. They were kind of making a deal, not a very wordy one but something a little less important.

“I like dimples, Kai.” Ruki stated before smiling.

“I have a dimple.” Kai pointed at the hole in his cheek before smiling.

“I like it.”

“Oh?”

“I named it Poco.” Ruki blushed before poking the dimple.

“You named my dimple.”

“Yes. But he rarely comes out to see me anymore.”

“He’s sorry.”

“I want him to see me more often.” Ruki pouted before fixing a loose strand in Kai’s hair.

“Okay. He will.”

Ruki smiled before biting his lip.

“I like you, Kai.”

“Really?” He wasn’t very amused due to the fact that he didn’t know how exactly the vocalist meant the recent remark.

“Yes.” Ruki nodded. “A lot.”

Kai finally noticed how Ruki meant the previous sentence and he merely smiled at it. Ruki smiled back before touching the dimple again and letting out a girly and quiet laughter escape his tired lips.

“More than your sunglasses?” Kai asked, wanting to test the man’s commitment.

“Yes.” Ruki nodded before leaning in and giving Kai an Eskimo kiss with his tiny nose. Kai stared at Ruki for a second before feeling his cheeks blush.

“If you’re going to do something like that…” Kai heard himself say. “Do it correctly.” And he leaned in for a kiss on the lips.
