Just for some perspective here; I took spanish all through HS AND college (I technically have a minor in it!), and the preterite/imperfect really messes me up! You're condensing a LOT of grammar into a very small timeframe. It's gonna be hard, but if you can get the important daily-use ones (haber, ser/estar, ir, dar, decir, etc.) and the general idea, you'll make do!

If it helps, think of the horrors of English in the present/past/imperfect!

I bring, I brang, I brought
I Drink, I Drank, I have drunk. (and I'm still drunk! / yup, he's a drunken sailor)
I think, I thought, I have thought/I used to think...

...it makes no sense! the patterns are horrid!

Also, and this is Very Important -- this is possibly the Second Most Important Trick To Learning a Language -- get drunk with the locals! (The first of course is date a local)

Unfortunately the situations in which we use the preterit and imperfect don't line up perfectly with the way they use them, do they? Or maybe we just use them incorrectly a lot in casual conversation.
