PEESEE I miss youuuuu. ;^;

Um. Let's see. Kids' lit is kind of my specialty.
Whimsical but dark like...have you ever read Coraline? I mean, it's daunting re-illustrating something McKean's done, but it's not like there were that many illustrations. Raold Dahl has lots of disturbing images to work with. Series of Unfortunate Events gets pretty silly/interesting. Anything Van Allsburg?

I have lots of ideas but I'm not really sure what sort of story you're looking for. Let me know when you're more awake? And did you get my text today? I've been thinking about buying an international texting plan. It's not actually that expensive.

There's no way they'd let me illustrate anything like that, I think - but I do appreciate the suggestions! :( There's good reason for them saying no, though. If you're going to re-illustrate something, it's a bad idea to pick something that's still current, contemporary, and doesn't really need the revamp, because people are just going to compare you to the original illustrator and it'd do us, as students, a disservice to be compared to a long-time pro, especially someone with the huge fanbase McKean has. Generally they want us to angle more towards Fairy Stories orrr stories that are used to seeing lots of different interpretations, like Alice in Wonderland.

I'm afraid I don't think the text got through, but it probably will later. I'm in a place waaaayy out of reception and sometimes it gets really poor about these things. :( I'm sorry.

NEXT TIME, BB, JUST TOTALLY SHOVE IT IN THEIR FACE AND TELL THEM YOU WON'T LEAVE UNTIL THEY LOOK AT IT.

THEY COULD ALWAYS DRAG YOU OUT, BUT LOL WHO CARES IT'D BE WORTH IT.

I'm thinking something actually quite dark, because I work well tonally.

The first thought that popped into my head was Where the Wild Things Are... if that helps at all. =D

I'll be praying for you~~ <3

Oooh, yes! I kind of want to do one that'll be quite similar to that, with the idea of a child wandering off into some dark environment and seeing lots of new things, and it all being more of an imagination thing. :D Maurice Sendak is an amazing illustrator.

Does it have to be on a story already created? I made up a story when I was little about my cats escaping to the outside world because they thought they had it SO BAD. They end up finding a portal where cats ruled over humans XD. In the end they decided they missed the old life, but I had fun thinking things up like that.

Nooope, we can write one if we want to. I kind of want to do something about journeys, either something to do with a child being bored on a train and finding ways to entertain herself or perhaps getting lost in some imaginary woods. They're not very clear ideas though - there needs to be a reason, a clear problem and a clear solution, so it's just figuring that out and then everything in between should slot into place. Thankfully the writing is really secondary to the illustrations, but it's important that we have something strong enough to work with visually and make the book look professional and not too indulgent. ♥
