In my eternal quest to become smarter without actually attending school, I've started doing independent studies of non-credit bearing university classes. I'm doing Intro to Linguistics currently and it's awesome! I can learn the material on my own time, nobody gives me a grade or sets arbitrary deadlines for me except for me...I know some people ( Read more... )

What is your native language (or languages if you grew up multilingual)? English
In what country/ies did you grow up speaking this language? USA
In what other language(s) are you fluent? No others.
What other language(s) have you studied (but not to the point of fluency) and what is your level of competency in the other language(s)? I have studied Spanish (6 years), French (3 years), German (less than 1 year), and rudimentary Italian (2 months) and ASL (2 months).
At what age did you begin learning the other language(s)? Probably around 10 years old.
In what country, and in what setting, did you learn/study the other language(s)? In the US, primarily in the classroom.
If you could magically learn to speak any language RIGHT NOW, what language would you choose? ASL. I actually plan to take a few courses in the next few semesters.
What is your age? People tell me I'm 27.

English

Well, Scots, I suppose.

German at 11, French about 25, Spanish maybe 23?

German - high school, also school trips to Germany. French and Spanish, on trips to those countries.

If you could magically learn to speak any language RIGHT NOW, what language would you choose?
Probably Spanish, as going there very soon and will feel slightly rude until I am reasonably competent.

What other language(s) have you studied (but not to the point of fluency) and what is your level of competency in the other language(s)? I have an intermediate knowledge of Spanish. So basically, I can carry on a pretty simple conversation, read stuff on the level of standard news stories, and that kind of thing. So not at all fluent, but I can get by.

In what country, and in what setting, did you learn/study the other language(s)? I studied Spanish in high school in the United States. I studied it more in college in an informal setting -- I had a friend who was a native speaker of Spanish who was trying to learn English, so we'd get together and talk in English for a while and talk in Spanish for a while. I really wish I'd thought to try to learn it as a child instead! If you ( ... )
