Well it's been the week of weeks, and everybody has to get something off their chest. I thought maybe I wouldn't need to, because I've been trying real hard to keep my voice quiet on the internet since 2013. After what happened, I kept my head down, kept quiet about my beliefs, tried hard to blend in. There is absolutely no pain in the world ( Read more... )

I've been avoiding the news since Tuesday, whereas I couldn't get enough of it before. Not sure if avoiding it for the next four years is feasible, will try.

We're in Canada, so to most of my coworkers, Trump being in charge is not great, but not horrific either. They shrug or grin : oh America, you so crazy. I'm afraid I can't share their sang-froid. I'm worried for everyone I know who's in the States. I have no idea what's going to happen, because Trump is both unpredictable and stupid, and because there will be so few checks on his behavior.

I'm also deeply saddened that Barack Obama will have to hand over everything to a racist who championed the "birther" nonsense (and then had the gall to lie about it). And I no longer hope the late great United States will have a female president in my lifetime.

There's still a lot of Canadian governance I disagree with, but this is the first time I've been happier than you got citizenship up there than down here. Not that you even are Muslim, but something tells me The Donald wouldn't stop to ask.

I just, ugh. But if it's any consolation, outside of the federal level, we actually had a great election across the country for all sorts of state and local things. 8 out of 9 marijuana referendums passed, which means more in more than half the nation it is now somehow legal to smoke pot. And a lot of terrible district attorney, who wield incredible power in their local areas, got bounced out of office by challengers. Joe Arpaio, the World's Worst Sheriff, is out of office for the first time in my lifetime.

So I wouldn't say there are 'no' checks on Trump's behavior. I'm not even sure about 'few'. Sometimes it's easier to fight back against a tyrant when the whole world is watching, and not suckered in by a handsome smile. We will see.
