i think that obsessive internet checking is a symptom of wishing to be elsewhere. i wish to be in the now. i am in the now.

It is. Or at least it's a way of reaching into the "somewhere else" hoping for a bit of distraction from now. If your now can be sufficiently stimulating that's the best.

i am mostly very happy where i am! but miss the county and the country and the west very much.

Is it so much the place or the people in a certain place? I compulsively check the internet when I am missing people regardless of my physical location. However, being in a pleasant environment always helps reduce loneliness.
