It's good to see that we can still rely on disasters to bring out both the best and worst in people. Facebook is full of people wanting arsonists 'burnt at the stake' or 'chained to a tree in front of the next bushfire' and such things. I think it has a bit to do with what I noticed to be a general decline in the publication quality of The Age itself over the past 36 months. Either that or everyone is getting dumber and we are just seeing the reflection of that.

Opinion columns are invariably dross.

They rely on user supplied content. I submit (most) internet forums as substantive evidence for the quality of such.
