"Not talking to them doesn't really bother me at all, nor does it make my life much more difficult. I just hate that I don't even sort of want to talk to my own parents, but every time I try to talk to my mother she gives me a massive list of my faults and just manages to make me feel even worse than I did before (this is particularly true in cases where I wasn't even sure this was possible; an extremely impressive skill, if you ask me!)"
That right there- describes a part of my relationship with my parents perfectly. It's sort of scary actually.
Do what you know will make you happy. I know that may not make your family happy, but I have come to learn that no matter what you do (and from the sounds of it you're in a similar situation) they're going to pick you apart about something anyways.
So if you want to drop out this term, drop out. It doesn't mean you can't return at a later time if you choose to, it's you doing what you need to do for yourself right now. And that's important.
