I have to say I don't read every book in that way, looking for meaning and subtext. Sometimes, I enjoy a story just cause its a good story. I don't know if there are a lot of contemporary books that I feel like I need to really get into in that manner. That is kind of what bothers me about book club sometimes, we dissect books that just aren't really worth dissecting. However, when we get one worth dissecting, it sure is fun. I'm really just babbling right now, but thought I'd chime in on this issue.
And isn't the job of a good writer to write a story that is engaging enough that we want to pay attention to all those details you are talking about? Maybe if we aren't paying attention, its bad writing?
