I may or may not have mentioned this.. but I joined the gym Tuesday night and have worked out every night so far! My best friend is going with me, so it isn't so bad. But last night, I was lifting some weights (I don't know what I'm doing, but I do 30 mins on the treadmill and then do some weights and the bike for the other thirty) and this guy ( Read more... )

Even though I'm the last person to have stepped in a gym, I will say that getting a personal trainer or enrolling in a class might not be a bad idea...that way you can learn what is the best way to exercise so that people don't laugh at your routine.

What incredibly rude behaviour! Take no notice of him; if he's prepared to be as ill-mannered as that, he's just forfeited the right to have his opinion taken seriously.

You may find an all-female gym suits you better, because sometimes you just can't win with men around. If you aren't as strong as they are, there is a possibility of getting reactions like the one you've just described... but if you are in any way stronger, heaven help you. My top half is not strong at all, but my legs make up for it; spending several of one's formative years pedalling around one of the hilliest parts of these fair isles on a three-speed tends to do that. I used to struggle to pull down 5 kg on the arm machines, but on the leg machines I was beating most of the men. I got some... interesting looks. :-D

No doubt he has laughed at a lot of other people before. If you can stick around you will get results, and might just make it easier for other people as well. It would be better if he laughed at me, for ceasing to go, and then ending up a bag of lard that is in no state to start going; but you are easier to laugh at, because you're in the right place. He can't laugh at me, I'm not there. You're doing better than I am.
