Yep, quite an amazingly reasonable rent compared to California :) And the first month or two in a new place always seem to have a bunch of settling-in costs, unfortunately. But it does sound lovely - can't wait for a video tour!

My old house was an 1850s stone cottage where the only adjoining building was a shared stair to the villa in front. It also had a cellar under part of it (end on to a slope). It could get freezing, even with decent central heating and modern windows. The bathroom floor over the cellar was ice cold no matter what. It would be warm with the heating on then as soon as it was off you wanted it back on.
Current 1900s tenement flat, with other flats all round and south facing with no central heating and only a gas fire and some electric radiators never gets all that cold unless the weather is exceptional.
So in short, yes, I reckon it's adjoining lived in spaces that make the difference.
