Hello then! I've added you to my friends list. Lotsa rain lately eh? Not too cold though, a friend of mine was here from Germany this week and says it's rather mild in comparison.
advertising is an appalling monster now-- at least, relative to how simple and naive it used to be in the days of mass media's youth.
television ads are now rapid-fire bombardments of images and sounds. and as flashy as they are, we are so acclimated to them that they seem coherent and uninteresting. the next ad you see, think on how quickly the image changes and how much ambient visual information you are consciously gleeming over.
it isn't a wonder that it becomes frighteningly easy to integrate subliminal communication into them. the more information, the less conscious attention we can pay-- hence, the more subconscious perception.
Well, even if we only talk about what is consciously visible in the ads, the audience targeting is much more focused in the ads I've seen lately. So, in this sense, you could say advertising has matured, it has eliminated ambiguity and universality. It is now a direct agent in selling and has compelling power. Yes, perhaps it alienates me, but at the same time I recognize it has gained traction at the expense of "blending in".
On my street there are now half-naked Naomi's advertising xmas lingerie. There is also the latest high-tech Sony digital camera with a zeiss lens and xmas cookies nearby. THere are also a couple of hair products "with free crystals" and a very elegant men's cologne from Cartier. These are all on street billboards such as the one mentioned above. It's impossible to walk by and not to imagine being a buyer of these products if even for a "what if" scenario.
