My favourite argument against gay marriage used to be "It devalues real marriage!", which conveniently is also the favourite argument of people who are, actually, against gay marriage ( Read more... )

Is it not technically what they have in the bank and such as well as the house? Which presuming they had separate bank accounts could mean the one that died might have more adding up to enough to charge inheritance tax. They could have had a relatively cheap house and just horded alot over the years, or had money in good stocks(though that's rather doubtful just now). Though that would just seem like they were hording rather a lot of money or living in a house that was probably rather large for them.

Well, the claim was that the surviving sister would have to move out when the first one died. That suggests the house (possibly including furnishings) is a sufficiently large proportion of the estate that they couldn't pay inheritance tax by selling other stuff instead.

Well if that is the case it wasn't mentioned in the post. It only said she "would be diddled out of her rightful inheritance by our miserly inheritance-tax laws". But then in that case I'm sure she can survive moving to a smaller place.
I'm not sure I totally agree with inheritance tax, but I don't think there's anything particularly special about these sisters.

I have to say I don't really have much sympathy for that case. I mean I suppose that it could be they saved money to have enough to survive the rest of their lives, but then how old were they and how long did they expect to live? There's plenty ways they could have spent the money or given it to worthy causes I'm sure. I'm sure the other sister will do fine unless for some reason the one that died had all their money and everything was down as being owned by her (in which case they should have done more planning ahead ( ... )

I agree with the above comments. (Well, i might do, im on my way to work and dont have time to read them).

Sisters growing old together isnt far off sexless marriage IMO. You leave those biddies alone pebble - use your journalist word mongering for better uses - such as making me rich.

Off to work and from there write an exciting "Everyone to arms! Elliahn is missing!"
