Credits!

High school credits from Japan came yesterday. 9th grade credits, and half a year or 10th grade credits. I thought I'd have to take a lot of mandatory classes to catch up, but they gave me much more credits for 10th grade then I'd expected. So basically I have exactly a half year of 10th grade done, so I'm half a year advanced then all the ( Read more... )

I hate raising my hand and participating in class too, and always thought those kids who raised their hands for every question were annoying. But, if you want to get into a good college, class participation is key -- teacher recommendations are a really important part of the application process, and if you don't participate in class/get to know your teachers somehow, they'll be less likely to write good recommendations for you. =\ (They might say stuff like "So and so did well in my class and got an A", but nothing more that will show that they really know you.)

Huh, maybe Japan's system would be better suited for me. I never speak up in class. I visited my high school teacher last week and she said that she totally had to pry answers out of me. And she knew I knew them. ^^;;

I don't know if I prefer applications based on what you do versus entrance exams for college. I think entrance exams would probably be easier for me since I usually do better than I think on tests. But it's so easy to mess up...do you get more than one chance to take them? And with scores, it's either you're in or you're not...no leeway is there?

Well, if you're good at tests then the entrance exams would probably better. I mean, most of the high school years are spent simply preparing for that big exam. There were a few people in my Japanese high school who threw away school work, and went completely for cram school. Because at cram school they only teach you stuff you need to know for the exams, tips to get around them. So those people would have terrible grades (near fail) for high school, but they'd get into super colleges like Tokyo University while the straight A people don't quite manage to pull it off ( ... )
