And I am only peripherally paying attention to politics lately, for the same reasons I can't watch movies which involve characters embarrassing themselves (such as Welcome to the Dollhouse). I don't have enough emotional distance there. I desperately want things to be better. I don't want to shout and cry and throw things in frustration

It's funny but my husband is like that about movies. Welcome to the Dollhouse, Napolean Dynamite, Little Miss Sunshine, The Office he hates them all. Even when I (and my sister) try to point out the sweet parts he doesn't get it.
