According to the NIH, people typically return to work six to eight weeks after their open heart surgery. I'm seriously hoping that I'm closer to six than to eight, so that I can call this the halfway point ( Read more... )

Nope-employers. Welcome to the world of federal contracting, where your employer may change from one year to the next, but your job & on-site supervisors will remain the same. The feds contract with the private sector to provide services which they deem "non-governmental" in nature. As I understand it, if the job doesn't involve you making decisions about where large sums of Uncle Sam's money are going, or doesn't have you speaking for the agency in front of the media or Congress, in many cases, it's non-governmental ( ... )

I was worried you might have to learn a whole new job on top of having your sternum put back together with chewing gum, crazy glue, and staples. That did not sound like fun.

It would be a scary thing indeed. Unfortunately, unless Congress gets its act together soon, I might have to look for a new job, anyway, along with a lot of other people in the DC area, because sequestration will nuke our jobs. Where we'd find new jobs, I have no idea, since DC is a company town for Uncle Sam. If he isn't hiring, nobody else is, either. I do know some people in the freelance editing & writing world, but that's not something I would enjoy as my sole source of income.
