I liked what he said, but can't support it because he was a jerk. Everyone was a jerk.

Unfortunately you're not the first person I've heard say this. It's unfortunate because much of what he says does resonate with me, and he doesn't have to be a jerk to get the good stuff across. :-/

John Howard Yoder is my homeboy! I finished my application to Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary last night and will send it off after I get off work at 8 in the morning.

I'm being nice when I say he was kind of a jerk. He was a turbo jerk. And it is rather unfortunate, because he wasn't a jerk the first time I saw him speak at the Missio Dei conference hosted by Wiconi International. I actually fell in love with his stuff there, so I was totally excited about him speaking in Louisville.

What's frustrating, Hippie, is that he wasn't a jerk until some seminary kid asked him a question he didn't like. To be fair, it was a weighted question and I can see why McLaren wasn't happy about it (after all, he has to get that all the time), but

a) He was smug and condescending and
b) He dodged the question by being smug and condescending

I agree with his views on social justice, but his refusal to even talk about his theology of salvation is a red flag to me. Beyond that, he continued to drive the point that eternity doesn't matter at all, which is another red flag. There has to be a marriage between "on earth" and "in heaven." You know what I'm sayin?
