Co-worker is an American term I reckon. It spells out exactly what it is, and you can't confuse it with college, or collage. I use colleague as a preference in a professional context, but colloquially I would use work friend, or someone from my team or the woman in my office, etc etc.
Having consulted with one of my collegues (work friends, woman in my office etc.) we reckon genocide is more wide ranging than ethnic cleansing and doesn't need to be on the grounds of ethnicity. Ethnic cleansing is to establish an ethnically homogenous geographic area. According to the UN it is a form of genocide. Also ethnic cleansing doesn't mean killing them all off, just forcing them out of said geographic area.
So there. Maybe you could use the term establish an ethnically homogenous geographic area, rather than ethnic cleanse, which does have connotations of the place being a bit grubby before hand.
