Uh, no. 8 passed by more than 50%. I don't think we can blame the Mormons exclusively. I'm actually surprised to hear that coming from you. People who have opposing view points should be stripped of their basic voting rights as an American? How open minded! .
I realize that everyone is looking for a scapegoat for 8 passing. Howbout instead of singling out an already kooky religious group, we look at the large percentage of Black and Latino voters that came out in California. This is a good thing! All the brown people are finally voting after years and years of encouragement! Hooray for the sucess of left wing politics! However, Many Latinos=Catholic=not too cool with the buggery thing. Afro-American culture, especially amongst males is very masculine in its nature and therefore, not too keen on it either. Finally, the predominate religion amongst Black Americans is Baptist, a group that also isn't very fond of Sodomites. So hooray for Americans breaking the culture and racial barrier by turning out in record numbers at the polls, but like I said it is just so inconvenient when they disagree with us.
Wow, you're really big on taking voting rights away from people who don't vote your way. I feel about this the same way I feel when some right-wing windbag wants to take away my vote for not being a Christian.
There's a bit of an irony here for the Mormons. They have run into some trouble of their own with governments taking away their right to polygamous marriage. Polygamy is now officially banned by the Mormon Church, and now they're the ones pushing for their standards on who can get married.
On the other hand, I don't think I have even once heard a liberal stand up for the right to polygamous marriage, even though most of the same arguments would apply.
Your comment is pretty funny, and I agree with it, but in more way than one. I'm all about voter turnout, and people participating in democracy, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to be upset when those same people decide to take away rights from various groups of people. They surely have a right to their opinion, but the only reasons I have heard for taking rights away from any particular group have to do with another group not liking them. Wasn't good when it was Jim Crow, or the glass ceiling, still not good when it's banning gay marriage.
I've been saying for a week now that homosexuals are the last frontier of civil rights. We got a black president now, lets lay off the rainbow brigade. I was disappointed that it passed. I had hoped that California would be a bit more hip. I was discussing it with a friend of mine, who lives in SF and is more exposed to the nature of 8 and his theory is that the people voting in favor of 8 were well organized and well planned, whereas the opposition was more scattershot, figuring that everyone would make the right choice. Its a micro example of the problems faced by the left wing in general. The conservatives do one thing really well, and thats organize and deploy their voters. They always have and they always will. I'm just glad that we elected the right guy, I wasn't sure what I would have done should we have elected the old dude.
