Can we get off this see-saw?

So Gavin's behavior at school this week hasn't been the best. The teacher does a thing with fish on a penguin. Every child starts the day with three fish. If they are good or do something nice, they can earn up to three more fish. If they are bad, they take a fish off ( Read more... )

That's too bad about his behavior. Maybe it's only because he's new at going to school every day? I'm sure he'll outgrow it soon.

I wouldn't get too worried. I think he's just testing the limits -- and maybe, in some ways, the minus-fish days mean he is feeling more confident in his environment and among the other kids. In the long run, that will be a good thing.

Aw, that is disappointing. Hopefully it's just an adjustment thing. Your idea about the video games is good, though. When I was a kid, we never had "punishments" or were grounded or anything. Instead, my parents called it "consequences." It was exactly the kind of thing you're suggesting. We can't go out and play, our favourite toys would be confiscated for a given period, or we weren't allowed to watch T.V. Of course, mom would also give us a "talk" about why what we did was wrong and get us to find out why we behaved the way we did. I hated it, but it's better than a physical punishment, I think.

If it keeps up for an extended period of time, then get worried. In the meantime, I also think it's just a phase.
