from suburban goddess on chron.com. in these very uncertain and kinda scary times, it is strangely refreshing to read an account of someone losing their job and actually taking ownership as to why they lost the job in the first place ( Read more... )

It's still a good lesson to take away from her story, and I can't say I don't feel sorry for her situation, single mom and all, but she shouldn't have been daylighting, as it's grounds for dismissal in just about every office I've heard of. Using company resources to make money on the side is bordering on unethical and illegal and she deserved to have her ass fired. Whining about it because she got busted and got fired, and blaming her boss and coworkers, doesn't change the fact that in this economic climate, there are plenty of people who would happily do her job, and not another job at the same time.

i totally agree with you. but the opening question she asks...

I keep playing things over and over in my head; what could I have done differently?

um, she could have not daylighted. isn't 'daylighting' the new 'day trading'? hell, i remember former employees at my dot com back in the late 90's-01 who were removed from the office by security for daytrading. like someone wasn't going to find out!

it's really, really stupid to even attempt to do it at all. at least she says 'don't freelance on company time, no matter how safe you think it may be'. because it's never safe - especially if you are using company property to freelance!
