I think you're right that people cannot be expected to adopt "normal" or helpful social attitudes when they are surrounded by others who are just as deceived/twisted as they are. This goes for the prison system too. I hear all this talk of rehabilitation in prisons, but how do you get past your lower moments in life when all your peers share that common low, and some of them are not at all remorseful about it?
As harsh as it sounds, maybe a re-integration into society is best, along with a 3 strikes & you're dead policy would work best. Ok, exhile would be more fitting punishment than death if an offender is not of the murderous kind. If they are, I have no problem with the state exercising its right to remove them from the populace permanently (at least in the case of 1st degree murder). 2nd ("crimes of passion")& 3rd degree (ex: negligent homicide, manslaughter) murder may not warrant the gillotine.

I completely agree with you here. Another article I was reading was on a peer-suicide prevention program in a prison, which at least is a step in the right direction. At least it recognizes the tendency of people to be influenced by whatever peers are around them.
