english paper advice

Quick, I need help. Let's say I need to write a 5,000 word english paper.. Does that word count usually include the quotations from the texts? I mean, what if I have a few loong quotes (indented and size 10 font)- can I exclude those from the total count? which might give me another 500 words or so.. both a good thing and a bad thing ( Read more... )

Uhhh... I don't think you exclude text. But I could be wrong. I haven't written papers in a while! Brevity, Maki, brevity! :).

Good luck!

erm.. yeah, I just realized I haven't written an english paper since freshmen year now. I'm having trouble with my past and present tenses too.. because I think I'm suppose to use present tense when talking about literature (ie. In The Wasteland Eliot describes the city as...) however, I have to use the past tense when describing modernism as a historical movement. (ie. Orwell believed industrialism brought a decline ... ) so I have this really awful mix of past and present tense and I don't know what to do about it... do you think that is okay? or am I wrong? is the whole thing suppose to be in one tense? sigh, I'm stressing because this paper is 100% of my grade. and it's a decent rough draft but it needs to somehow become a good final draft in a few days.

but thanks so much for your advice and well wishes. I really appreciate it!

In Switzerland you include all text (including quotes) in the word count as well as the index of contents but not the abstract nor the works cited. Then again, I don't even know if you have to have all those things... Hope this helps?

In fact you probably don't need any of those things (unless they specifically tell you to) so I guess this isn't very helpful. But umm...on the bright side, by the time you read this you'll probably already have finished your paper?
