Plebiscite

The closest I've ever got to participating in a referendum is helping to sand down the electoral urn box we built in Technical Education class in middle school. Seeing as I have still not got around to citizenship, I'll just have to settle for being nosy.

Poll AV referendum poll

I am horribly torn and can't decide. Feel I should vote to make the point that I'm not just apathetic, but can see many downsides to all options!

I knew I had missed an option somewhere - and it's the one I'd have wanted to tick right now if I could vote! (Though at the moment I would probably vote Yes largely because of the meretricious leaflet from the No people.) You can always come back later, once you've voted or not.

Damn it, I had just formulated a cunning plan that I was going to see if you came back with a fervent and committed view, then vote on your behalf on the grounds that then *someone* would be expressing a strong preference, but that's no good now!

philmophlegm I suspect would like me to vote 'yes' on the grounds that he will be voting 'no' and then we will cancel each other out and neither of us have to bother, but I feel that will be interpreted as a vote for apathy. I'm not apathetic, I'm just undecided. (I should have that on a T-shirt)

Though it's not so much 'meh, but let's try it' as 'meh, but it's better than what we've got even if it's not ideal, so I shall vote for it on the grounds that a little progress is better than none,' in my case.

More positively, 'Yes to AV, but I'd rather have single transferable vote in multi-member constituencies, and no more use of the D'Hondt system/party lists'.

That's my kind of 'meh'.

Plus, I feel that if the AV vote fails, the goverment may fail, and that might be a good thing...

So short-term double maybe vs not quite so short term single maybe with a foam of expectancy.

I'm envious of the swiss this morning, having found out they have referenda whenever lots of people want one. Voting yes because a step in the direction of more democracy here is good.

I will be voting Yes this evening, as I think a Yes - while a long way from being perfect - is better than a No.

Remind me to email you this evening, BTW.

I'd rather have STV/multi member constituencies, as I think AV is not the best form of PR, but it's certainly better than FPTP.
