I just found out that we're in the same taxonomic suborder (Eupelycosauria) as Dimetrodon and Edaphosaurus. Apparently we're closer to the Dimetrodon, which means that Dimetrodon is more closely related to our Permian ancestors than it is to the Edaphosaurus.

I haven't read a book on prehistoric reptiles since i was about eight: so I could be wrong here... lol

Yes, the sail thing is interesting. If two more remotely related reptiles had the sail, then Permian pre-mammal presumably had it also. Must look at the therapsids and cynodonts (successively closer again and more recent - later Permian, I think).
