I think I should feel concerned. My avast! antivirus program has, up until very recently finished each run by telling me that it has tested somewhere between 305,000 and 310,000 files in however many folders and found 0 infected files. I have run it three times today, because it is now telling me that has tested 78010 files in 6256 folders, and ( Read more... )

300k is a huge number of files for a home computer; 78k seems more normal. If 78k excludes the archived files, I would imagine 300k includes them, and it may have decided to do that itself.

Everything seems sorted now. I think I must have slipped while clicking on buttons and inadvertently turned off archive-checking. When you select the option to check the hard drive, a little tab pops up where you can select thoroughness of scan, and there is a tick-box to enable or disable archive checking. I have now reversed the setting, and upped the thoroughness level, so it's now giving me about 338k files checked. Thanks for bday wishes (be careful how you pronounce that).
