I meant to read this and comment on this when you first posted it, but I've had no time until now! But now I have read it: that was really interesting. Donny/Smitty is a pairing that I like, but wouldn't define as an OTP, mostly because of their lack of interaction within the film, but this has actually tipped the scales towards me liking the pairing more (as opposed to pretty much just reading it when you write it, because I really enjoy your writing)!

... I wish I had more thinky thoughts to share in response, but mostly I'm just like YES, THAT. COOL BEANS.

Thanks! Yeah, it's such a long response to my friend's reaction to the pairing, but it was nice to get a feel for why I do love Donny/Smitty. It is hard to define though, as there's no interaction between them on-screen or in-script. I love them both individually and as characters though. They're definitely my OTP for this film, but some of the work that comes out of this fandom is so fantastic, I'll pretty much read anything so long as it's well-written.

That's totally an appropriate response, and it's nice to know people read and sort of get my verbal diarrhea.

THIS. This is what I love about fandom. sure the fic and porn is fun, but this kind of thing is the real meat n' potatoes. It's like literary analysis with a collective memory.

I like this little article. It probably helps that I also ship Donny and Smitty like mad, but I agree with your major points.

If I may ask, who's Mormon johnny?

Thanks! I'm way into over-analyzing all the media I enjoy, whether that's literature or film or visual art.

Mormon Johnny is a fan-created character, one of Smitty's boyfriends who apparently did a lot of coke. I like referencing him in conversation, the same way I do with my own fanon character, Benny Shankman.
