in the meantime

Remember how I was going to write more this year? Ha!

Other of my January intentions went fairly well, though. I wanted to embrace some kind of fun, physical, childlike way of movement. I started dancing in my living room. I talked about parkour and jazzAnd then I went beyond talking and actually signed up for a beginner parkour class. Y'all, so ( Read more... )

Sorry to hear about your foot. I hope you have a speedy recovery. My new year's resolution was to post more and that only last a few months.

I spent the past 3 months waiting to move and now that I am finally all moved in, it is such a relief. The best thing about my new place is the elevator. I spent over 7 years walking up & down four flights of stairs everyday.

Have you thought about going back to Parkour afterwards? I am looking for something new to get me out of the house. A friend of mine wants me to try Paintball but I don't think that is for me. There is a new bouldering/rock climbing place opening up that I might check out.

Thanks! I'm not sure whether I'll go back to parkour afterwards. Part of me really wants to, and another part of me is pretty anxious about the idea of going back to the thing that caused me trouble to begin with. Because it wasn't like it was a freak accident. It was the regular practice that was causing me problems. But we'll see--because it really was lots of fun! But climbing is still my favorite thing ever!

Glad you're enjoying your new place! I'm looking forward to moving. My apartment itself is pretty great, but the location is a big pain. Also involving lots of stairs, but in my case it's the route from the Metro to my house that has them.

Oooh, so sorry about the injury! And just as you were having so much fun, too! Frack!
I'm not sure how to work getting out and about with the foot trouble, but for exercise, focus on upper body. Do you have a pullup bar? dumbells? work push ups from the knees or one legged? Core work like crunches?

For foot injury motivation, watch this vid. This is the CrossFit Regionals. Julie Foucher, one of the favorites, competing for her last year before she "retires" to focus on medical school, tore her Achilles at the end of event 3. This is event 4, which she does with her boot on!
And she goes on to do another two events, one of which included rowing! She won't be moving on ultimately, but what guts! And what heart!

And a little bit closer to home, here's my CrossFit coach, who broke 2 bones in her foot a couple weeks ago practicing back tuck flips at a gymnastics day we had. Go Kristi! So rest and heal, but don't let it get you down! Figure out what works for you to move forward even with the dreaded boot ( ... )

I'm not sure whether those are motivational or just make me feel like I'm slacking! I'm completely dumbfounded by the handstand walking with the boot. These things are SOOOOOO heavy! My balance is all thrown off just in terms of moving around on two legs. The core strength she must have to do that on her hands, especially with her legs so straight, is just crazy!

But I do need to get serious about an actual routine, and not just doing some knee pushups and crunches here and there. I don't really have anything other than a yoga mat at home for exercise, but have at least been trying to do some body weight stuff. I'll try to channel the inspiration!

Sorry about your foot. But Parkour! I love it so much. I'm convinced I could do it, but in reality, I'd probably die.

It just looks so fun.

I've been playing more sports for the same reason. It's just more fun than the gym, but it's gotten me two broken fingers and a horrible turf burn.

I hope you recover quickly and find something fun to do that doesn't break you. :)

You could do it! Seriously, all parkour is, really, is a way of moving through space. It doesn't have to be the crazy flips and jumps. Those are cool, but there are about a million more manageable steps before you get there. IJS.

And thanks! Fun without breaking is the basic goal, yes. Climbing will always be my first love, but geography is getting in my way with that a bit at the moment--just not a great place to climb here that isn't way out in the 'burbs and therefore difficult to get to, especially when you don't have a car. But I suspect I'll rededicate myself to the bike when I'm out of the boot but still low-impact, and then we'll see how things go eventually.

I'm sorry to hear about the foot injury. Was this caused specifically by starting the new sport, or was it more something that you may have already had that became aggravated by doing parkour? At any rate, hang in there during the recoup and healing. Sounds like it's very frustrating, and understandably so. Those periods of life when we have to do a lot of waiting - a test of patience, attitude, and spirit more than of body - can be very trying. But they can be rewarding to. May you find opportunity to see new blessings you may not have noticed before because of this slower, waiting time you're having to endure. :)

I was going to make some kind of suggestion about exercising that focuses on upper body, but I see de23 beat me to it. She's much more knowledgeable about those sorts of things than I am, so even if her initial suggestions aren't workable for you she might have other ideas. I'm sure she'd be welcome to you picking her brain on the topic. ;) As for getting out an about, obviously going anywhere requires pain and effort now, but ( ... )
