Sherlock Holmes pastiches, literary and televised

"I am an omnivorous reader with a strangely retentive memory for trifles."

So said Sherlock Holmes in The Adventure of the Lion's Mane. Me, I can't claim to have a good memory, but I'm most certainly both a reader and strangely retentive at times. And, as anyone could tell you, a fan of Sherlock Holmes ( Read more... )

Jeremy Brett. I loved him as Sherlock Holmes from the first moment I saw the series. I do like both David Burke and Edward Hardwicke as Watson, but for some reason I've been a bit more fond of Hardwicke's Watson. When Holmes cries out "John!" in The Devil's Foot my slashy heart goes pitter pat!

Jeremy Brett really is godlike in many ways. He was also the Holmes with whom I grew up -- it was on every Saturday at 7:30 p.m., right after dinner, and the entire family gathered around the TV to watch it. Hardwicke made a fabulous Watson, but Burke will always be my choice... possibly because the early episodes (REDH, DANC, especially) were my favourites.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Well, keyboard. :D

I don't think it's particularly canon or anything, but I'm really very fond of Case of Evil.

I managed to get to the 221B Baker Street when I went to London. <3 <3 <3 <3 <33333 A childhood dream come true. *le sigh*

Case of Evil

I don't think I ever saw that one. Hmmm, Vincent D'Onofrio as Moriarty. I ought to make an effort to see it just for that...

The 221B Baker Street museum is really a gem. :) Somewhere, there's a picture of me as a precocious 12-year-old with horrid 80s glasses, sitting in a chair with a deerstalker hat on and a pipe in my hand, grinning like an idiot.

You know, I don't think I ever saw that series... and I couldn't find any info on whether it'd be available somewhere on DVD or something. I guess it's true that everyone's Holmes preference is the one with which they grew up. ;)

Oh, wow, thanks for that link! Me and my dictionary (my formerly fluent French is, alas, really horribly rusty) just spent a lovely hour or eight there. :D

I haven't read a Holmes pastiche for ages. Although I have tried to hunt down a copy of My Dearest Holmes by Rohase Piercy. Someone said there would be a new edition this summer, but no such thing happened yet ( ... )

Damn, Robbie Coltrane as Mycroft would be ace. Ditto for Anthony Stewart Head as, well, anyone... he'd play a mean Moriarty, too, I'd bet. Yes, yes, yes to all. *nods*

And consider yourself friended right back. :)

Brett *is* Holmes, he plays all the character's eccentricities and passion perfectly.

Oh, yes. Yes yes yes. I've seen oodles of Holmeses (is that a word?) in the telly or on stage, and nothing has beat the Brett-Man.

That the Burke eps are my favourites probably has a lot to do with the fact that they're also my favourite Holmes stories overall, the early ones. But Hardwicke has his moments of strength, too, especially his range of reactions when Holmes returns from death in EMPT.
