Gemma kissed the bottom of the hand-written note and tied it to the string of the lone lightbulb in the kitchen.
I love the loneliness of this phrasing, both for what Gemma's feeling and how it's going to hit the other person when she comes home.

Interesting! Portland Oregon, or the one in Maine?

Not so much evolving... none of them lives in Portland per se. It is the largest city, and thus has a news broadcast station, which can be picked up over a rather wide range.
